Peniscola

Setting

Peniscola consists of a number of distinct parts: Firstly the famous peninsula, also known as the 'city in the sea', where you find the beautiful castle and old town. The more modern town of Peniscola with High Street etc. is on the mainland. It is the size of a large village and is open for business all year round. Reaching up the hills from the centre you have pretty and mature residential areas with various urbanisations. Going south of the centre you will soon get to the nature reserve of the Sierra d'Irta, a stunning area where you can find beautiful quiet coves and small beaches.

Amenities

The main town offers you all the main amenities including shops, restaurants and bars, supermarkets, health centre, banks etc. In the old town there are plenty of little shops opening in summer, which sell arts & crafts, plus restaurants offering the locally caught fish. You can sit in the narrow pedestrianised streets or in the squares and enjoy the lovely food or have a drink.
There is a large variety of restaurants both in the old town and in the main town, serving 'menu del dia' and tapas, and you will always be able to enjoy the fresh, locally caught fish and seafood.
Along the seafront is a very long and wide sandy beach going all the way to Benicarlo. On the other side of the peninsula is the second, smaller beach of Peniscola.

History

Peniscola has a very long history dating back to the Iberians, and has been influenced by later occupations by Carthage and Phoenicia. The castle itself was built by the Knights Templar and dates back to the late 13th century. Later it was home of Pope Benedict XIII, which gave the castle its name of 'Papa Luna'. The castle of Papa Luna famously starred in the Hollywood movie 'El Cid', and more recently in the series 'Game of Thrones'.
