Setting

Cervera del Maestre is one of those really pretty villages in Spain. It has just over 700 inhabitants including those living in the countryside around the village and is at an altitude of  316 metres.
The setting is fantastic, on top of a hill, looking down over the countryside towards the sea. Yet it is not difficult to get to, as it is only 15 minutes from the coastal town of Benicarlo and a 20 minute drive to the beach.  The countryside here is unspoilt, despite being so close to the coastline. Coming up from Calig you drive through almond, orange and olive groves.
In late winter the almond blossom changes the scenery, in April / May orange blossom scents the whole area.

Amenities

Apart from good looks and good views Cervera offers a couple of very nice restaurants, a superb bakery and there are some small supermarkets, shops and banks. In summer the municipal pool opens for the residents so you do not have to drive to the beach every time you fancy a dip.

Another point in favour of Cervera is the fact that it is pretty close to the CV10, which will go all the way to the new airport near Cabanes and also to the regional capital of Castellon.

Cervera del Maestre is the ideal location if you are looking for a quiet place which is not too far from the beaches and the bustle of the seaside towns and resorts (Vinaros, Benicarlo and Peniscola are almost equidistant to Cervera).

Apart from buying a ruin for refurbishment or a renovated town house there is also the option to build a country home in the vicinity of Cervera. Usually there are a number of rustic plots for sale in this area.

History

Cervera del Maestre dates back to prehistoric times and later used to be a strategic settlement of the Romans and then the Arabs. It was also the base of the order of the "Hospitaliter" and you can still see the ruins of the castle on top of the mountain and the church with tower in the centre of Cervera, dating back to the middle of the 18th century.
